Ana Lucia Chaverria receives a scholarship check from John L. Lemkan of the New York Mercantile Exchange after winning the NYMEX Open Outcry Competition.

Mario Bejarano is one of five UH Bauer students awarded a prestigious internship with Sponsors for Educational Opportunities.

University of Houston C. T. Bauer College of Business finance students are racking up honors this spring, securing their standing alongside top-tier business students from across the nation and around the world. The accomplishments showcase two of Bauer’s most valuable strengths – unparalleled diversity that is both gender-based and multicultural, amidst a tradition of academic excellence. The wins also further establish the school as an educational institution capable of providing top talent to corporations looking for the very best hires in the current high-stakes, competitive business climate.

Among the student achievements that are building up the Bauer brand and showcasing the school’s growing stature in the fields of investment banking and global corporate leadership:

  • A Bauer team ranked first in the U.S. and third in the world in the Global Investment Research Challenge, sponsored by the Chartered Financial Analysts Institute and held in New York City May 1. Members of the winning team include Joe Corkin, Mauricio Franco, John Keeton, and Quyen Nguyen, all graduate students in Bauer’s Finance department. Hong Kong Baptist University and the University of New Brunswick placed first and second, respectively. Bauer not only out-performed Texas schools, but business school powerhouses like MIT and Carnegie-Mellon University, who participated in earlier rounds.
  • Two Bauer women took first and second place honors in the NYMEX Open Outcry Competition, a simulated trade competition hosted by the Global Energy Management Institute since 2002 that highlights commodities trading, a traditionally male-dominated field. Undergraduates Ana Lucia Chaverria and Rieza Marukot took first and second place wins, respectively. Last year’s competition was also won by a female Bauer Finance and Accounting student, Saeeda Jamaluddin (’07), now a part of the trading team with ConocoPhillips. The NYMEX competition draws students from the University of Texas-Austin, Rice University, Oklahoma State University, Columbia University and Tulane University.
  • Five Bauer students were awarded prestigious investment banking and global corporate leadership internships from Sponsors for Educational Opportunities (SEO) this year, more than any other Texas school. SEO internships are some of the most sought after in the country and often lead to full-time job offers. Recruiters consider Black, Hispanic/Latino, Asian and Native American students from top schools such as Babson College, Harvard University and Cornell University for jobs at top New York City investment firms. This year, Bauer sent the most students from any Texas school. The students, who will be supported by an extensive mentoring program, include: Mario Bejarano, Atiba Henry, Mubeen Khumawala, Reagan McKinney and Jing Xie.
