    Qualifications
  • Is a Marketing PhD a more advanced MBA degree?

    A PhD is different from an MBA. An MBA degree is a professional degree for future business leaders. All our recent Ph.D. graduates went on to become college professors who conduct research, create new knowledge, and teach marketing classes in universities and colleges.

  • Must I have a master's degree to enter the Ph.D. program?

    No.

  • How important is my work experience in the admission decision?

    Professional experience is not required for admission.

  • Must I have an undergraduate degree to enter the Ph.D. program?

    Yes. You must have a four-year undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university if you received your education in the United States. If you are an international applicant, your undergraduate degree must be the equivalent of a U.S. four-year bachelor's degree. If you have completed a three-year Bachelor of Commerce (B.COM) degree from India or Pakistan, we also require that you have completed the Master of Commerce (M.COM) degree or similar post-graduate degree. For specifics on International requirements, you may contact The International Admissions Office.

  • What undergraduate major is required?

    No particular undergraduate major is required in order to pursue the Ph.D. in Marketing.

  • Can I apply as a transfer student from a Ph.D. program at a different school?

    All applicants must complete an application with all the required materials before the deadline, regardless of their status at another school.

  • Does Bauer offer a professional Ph.D. or DBA in Marketing?

    No. Our program is academic oriented and all our Ph.D. students are full time.


  • Admissions Process
  • When should I apply?

    We begin accepting applications in September for the following academic year. The deadline for applications is February 1.

  • When will I be notified of the admission committee's decision?

    The faculty meets in February to make admission decisions. Admission notification is made by April 15.

  • How many Ph.D. students does your program admit each year?

    Every year we admit two to three students to the program from an applicant pool of more than 50.

  • Do you have a fixed quota for consumer behavior vs. quantitative admissions?

    No. We admit the best applicants, irrespective of the intended research interests. Every year, we recruit both consumer behavior and quantitative students.

  • Do Bauer Marketing Ph.D. students receive financial aid?

    All students admitted into the Ph.D. program receive financial aid, ranging from $31,870 to $35,710, based on 1) a $2,100 per month stipend with annual increases through the third year, 2) a possible fellowship during a student's first two years and teaching compensation thereafter, and 3) tuition waiver (less student-paid fees). Our doctoral students work as graduate assistants, doing joint research with faculty members.

  • How are the recent job placements of your program?

  • Can I do it part time or online?

    The Ph.D. in Marketing program at Bauer is a full time program. No Ph.D. level course is offered through online or distance learning.

  • How many years does it take to earn a Ph.D. in Marketing?

    Almost all our students complete the program in 4-5 years.

  • Can I register to begin my Ph.D. in Marketing program for a spring or summer semester?

    Admission is only for the Fall semester.

  • Can I request an interview or visit during the application process?

    Interviews are not granted prior to admission decisions.

  • Can I request feedback on my application prior to admission decisions?

    The admissions committee or marketing faculty cannot offer feedback on individual applications.

  • Can I request feedback on my application if I am not offered admission?

    The admissions committee cannot offer feedback on individual applications.


  • GMAT, GRE, & GPA
  • Do you accept the GRE instead of GMAT score?

    Either GRE or GMAT is acceptable. While there is no minimum test score requirement, good performance improves the chance of admission. The scores cannot be older than 5 years, and official scores should be sent to University of Houston, Main Campus ETS code 6870.

  • Can the GMAT/GRE scores be waived?

    No. GMAT/GRE score CANNOT be waived. There are no exceptions.

  • What is the minimum score required for the GMAT or GRE?

    There is no minimum score requirement, but good performance improves the chance of admission. The median GMAT score of our current Ph.D. students is 680. A GMAT score lower than 630 or a combined GRE score lower than 310 significantly reduces the probability of admission.

  • What is the minimum acceptable grade point average (GPA)?

    There is no minimum GPA requirement, but good performance improves the chance of admission.

  • If I take the GMAT/GRE more than once, are my scores averaged?

    No. The admissions decision will be based on your highest score. Scores cannot be older than five years.

  • I've taken the GMAT/GRE more than once. Can I submit components from various testing dates?

    No. Component GMAT/GRE scores must be reported from the same date.

  • What if my official GMAT/GRE scores arrive after the deadline?

    We must have your official GMAT/GRE score by the application deadline, which is February 1 for all applicants. ETS generally takes 12-15 working days to send the scores, so please plan accordingly.

  • How long does it take for UH to receive my scores?

    Usually, official scores will be reported to UH four weeks after you take the test.


  • TOEFL
  • Is the TOEFL required for foreign applicants?

    Yes, if you earned your college degree outside the U.S., Australia, New Zealand, English-speaking Canada, or the United Kingdom, regardless of whether the program you attended was conducted in English. TOEFL scores may not be more than 2 years old. TOEFL is waived for applicants who earned a previous college degree (Undergraduate, Master's, or Doctoral) in the countries listed above.

  • I'm a foreign student studying in the U.S., but haven't received my degree yet, can TOEFL be waived?

    If you are going to earn a college degree (Undergraduate, Master's, or Doctoral) before enrollment in our doctoral program (August), TOEFL can be waived. This is applicable to degrees in the U.S., Australia, New Zealand, English-speaking Canada, or the United Kingdom. Studying but without earning a college degree in the aforementioned countries, TOEFL cannot be waived.

  • Must I also take the TWE (Test of Written English)?

    No, it is not required for admission.

  • My education was completed overseas, but I am now a U.S. citizen. Can the TOEFL be waived?

    No. Whether you are a U.S. citizen (or permanent resident) is not the issue. You must take the TOEFL unless you have completed a previous academic degree in one of the countries mentioned above.

  • I completed an ESL program with UH. Does the certificate allow me to waive the TOEFL?

    No.

  • If I take the TOEFL more than once, are my scores averaged?

    No. We consider only your highest score.

  • How do I find out more information about the Marketing faculty at Bauer?

    We have world-class faculty with varied backgrounds and research interests. Please go to the faculty directory to find the details. This is a very active research faculty in marketing, as shown in our publications page. Between 2012 and 2016, our faculty published 16 papers in the top marketing journals (Journal of Marketing Research, Journal of Marketing, Journal of Consumer Research and Marketing Science). This is the platinum standard for research and is not easily accomplished. This puts our department in the top 40 of marketing departments in the U.S.

  • How much do Ph.D. students interact with the faculty?

    In addition to daily interactions with the faculty, we also have a number of opportunities for doctoral students to increase their exposure to research. Each Friday we have a research seminar where scholars from universities all over the country and the world come to present their research to the faculty and students. During this visit, the visiting scholar has breakfast with a group of doctoral students and meets with them to answer questions and discuss research. For the last three decades, we have hosted the annual UH Marketing Ph.D. Symposium where doctoral students from major Ph.D. programs - UH, Arizona, Arizona State, Columbia, Florida, Texas A&M, UCLA, USC, UT Austin, UT Dallas, and Wharton - come to UH to present their research.

  • What courses do I take in my Marketing Ph.D. program?

    The Department of Marketing and Entrepreneurship offers several Ph.D. level core courses. In addition, students may take electives on Economics, Psychology, Management and other related disciplines. You can find more information regarding our curriculum.

  • What's the culture of the Ph.D. program?

    The Marketing Ph.D. program is a closely knitted group composed of faculty and students. Our faculty comes to the department everyday, and their offices are always open to our Ph.D. students. Our students study together; they help each other. Life-long friendship and collaborations develop.
