Staff Development Circle
Established in Fall 2016, the Staff Development Circle was formed from the combining of the Staff Rewards Committee and the Morale and Training committees, which were created in 2008 to maintain a system to recognize extraordinary staff efforts and provide meaningful rewards for those efforts.
Tuition Reimbursement Program
Each Fall and Spring semester, full-time staff members may apply for $1,500 tuition reimbursement. Funding is also available for academic study in the summer.
The number of reimbursements awarded each semester depends on the income from the endowment earnings. Currently, we can award eleven reimbursements in Fall and Spring, and any remaining funds will be made available for summer reimbursements. Due to the high volume of successful tuition reimbursements in the fall and spring, there is very little chance of available funds for the Summer 2018 semester.
Bauer Staff Tuition Reimbursements are intended to fund academic coursework that is part of a degree or certificate program. Coursework must be graded, i.e., A, A-, B+, B, ... Preparatory, leisure learning, remedial and/or non-graded courses (including Pass/Fall or Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory) are not eligible for the Bauer Staff Tuition Reimbursement.
- Applicants must have been a full-time Bauer College staff member for at least one year prior to the semester for which the reimbursement is requested.
- Minimum grade of B required in each course.
- Since funds are limited, applicants must submit their reimbursement request within these time periods:
- Fall semester: April 9 - August 20
- Spring semester: November 12 - January 18
- Summer sessions: April 9 - June 1
When completing the request, note that the supervisor’s signature is required only if the class(es) taken are during the work week, Monday through Friday, between 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.
Bauer Staff Tuition Reimbursement Requests should be submitted either as an attachment to an email (firstname.lastname@example.org) or as a hard copy to one of the SDC members, not both. Think GREEN!
T.E.D. awards are available year around in recognition of Tremendous Employee Dedication. Nominations are based on a staff member going "above and beyond" their job requirements. The TED award is a monetary award of $50 to staff (or $25 to student workers), not to exceed those amounts in one fiscal period. STAR Rewards Program
Bauer STAR Rewards Program started in 2009. The STAR stands for “Staff Talents Are Recognized.” Criteria for giving Bauer STARs are flexible. In general, the award recognizes exceptional performance or exemplary actions resulting in quality service, including compassion and caring, that go well beyond expectations for customer service.
How staff members get a STAR:
Blank STAR cards (right) are available from the Staff Development Circle members.
The STARs can be completed by the person wishing to commend a Bauer staff member and sent to email@example.com. The SDC will download and print the STAR and send it to the exceptional staff member.
Anyone can give a Bauer STAR to a staff member (prospective students, students, other staff & faculty) by filling out the STAR card.
If a staff member receives a special thank you email or thank you card for outstanding service, the email or card can be taken to a SDC committee member to complete a STAR for you (this cannot be a regular thank you email, it must be one for outstanding service; it will be evaluated by the SDC to see if it qualifies for a STAR).

When a staff member receives a STAR that has not been stamped, they must take it to one of the SDC members to get it validated with a stamp.
An SDC member will log the entry into a spreadsheet to keep track of valid stars.
Bauer STAR award events will take place three times a year. A prize will be awarded to the staff member with the greatest number of STARs for that preceding time period. Additionally, all staff members receiving STARs — except the one with the greatest number of STARs — will have their names in a drawing. Each recipient’s name will be entered in the drawing once for each STAR award received during that period, and the selected name(s) will receive a prize.
- Period 1 Award: (Deadline December 1)
- Stars received from August 1 - November 30
- Period 2 Award: (Deadline April 1)
- Stars received from December 1 - March 31
- Period 3 Award: (Deadline August 1)
- Stars received from April 1 - July 31
STARs from a previous period cannot be used toward a future period.
Additional reward possibilities are being explored and will be added as developed. The Staff Development Circle is comprised of full-time Bauer staff members (names listed below) and welcomes staff input about staff rewards and opportunities. Professional Development Funds
Professional Development Funds are available through the SDC to nourish, extend knowledge and create expertise for employees at the UH Bauer College of Business. Some examples of acceptable opportunities for use of these funds are to attend conferences, pay for memberships or to attend workshops.
Staff members can be awarded up to $1,000 per person from the SDC. However, you or your department can cover additional costs if the total cost of development opportunity exceeds $1,000. The Fund is available for benefits eligible staff who have been with Bauer for at least one year. The Professional Development Request Form is located at the right.
Please complete the Professional Development Request Form (right) and sign, and then submit to your direct supervisor for approval. Once you have received your supervisor's signature and the form is complete, you may submit to the SDC via e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org. The applications will be evaluated by the committee and awarded based on cost and benefit analysis.
Annual Outstanding Staff Member Awards
The Staff Development Circle has been hard at work to continue bringing you recognition for all the exceptional effort Bauer staff members put into affecting change here at the University, and we are ready to unveil our updated Outstanding Staff Awards. We’ve had to make a few changes this year to maintain compliance with University and State policies, so this year, instead of a check, the recipients will be provided with professional development funds. These funds will be facilitated through the SDC and can be used to for items related to your development.
Staff Excellence Award: Three awards in the amount of $1,000.
Each award recognizes meritorious service, dedication, and contribution to the college beyond the requirements and expectations of the job. Characteristics of an employee’s performance which contribute to excellence include:
- Superior job performance and a high degree of proficiency in their areas of responsibility;
- Outstanding personal traits such as dedication, loyalty, reliability, courtesy, honesty, and initiative;
- Continuous demonstration of service concepts necessary to support the department and the university;
- Initiative in making improvements to work methods, standards, or operations; or developing new programs, services, or cost savings which enhance or support the department of the university.
Any full-time Bauer staff member who has worked for Bauer College for at least one year may be nominated. Nominations must be signed by the nominee's direct supervisor.
Deadline for nominations is 5 p.m. on Monday, May 7, 2018. Deadline includes nomination form and any attachments in support of the nomination.
No late nominations will be accepted.
Awards will be announced at the Bauer Staff Appreciation Luncheon.
